PHOTOGRAPHY
How does one talk about one's self? Well here goes. First got involved in photography when I was approached by the Western Education and Library Board in Omagh many years ago to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. I chose first aid, swimming and yes photography. I was an apprentice in the Ulster Herald group and a gentleman there, Billy Birney gave me my first tuition in basic photography. When Jackie Sloan arrived in the company it was he who really educated me in the world of photography.
Shortly after that the company asked me to do some work as a freelance photographer and as one would say, the rest is history.
Left the Ulster Herald in 2002, or better still the company left me, but this was the start of a new adventure for myself and I can honestly say, the best thing that could ever happen to me, as I now love my work!
And who wouldn't ? I'm my own boss, but don't be fooled by thinking this is great , you are your own boss. You're worse than all the bosses you have ever met, because it 's your company and you want it to succeed. And I believe it has.
The many friends I have met, young, very young , old and very old and this is what I like about my work. Meeting people, people I know, new people, different towns, different counties, the fun, the craic.
I'm married with four children, Ryan the eldest, a charm to meet, works as an assistant editor in the Leinster Express in Portlaoise, Rhona, first daughter, and we know what daughters are like, a civil servant in Belfast studying to be an accountant. Rory, second son and studying law in Belfast, just like his big brother, a treasure. And then there is the youngest, the youngest daughter, Rachael, what can we say about the Brat, haven't got the time or the space to tell you all, but all I can say (or better say) I love them all, like any parent would.
My wife, Geraldine is a civil servant in Omagh, and like all us poor married men, nothing civil about her!
So I have been on the road seven years now as a freelance photographer working for newspapers such as the Impartial Reporter, Enniskillen; Observer Group, Dungannon; Donegal Democrat; Irish News; Newsletter and Irish Daily Star. There is a lot more newspapers but these are the main newspapers I make my living from.
I hope you like my website and if you have any comments or queries, well keep them to yourself, no seriously would love to hear from you. ©
